Softball tramples Toledo in season opener

The Fresno State softball team kicked off its season with a bang Thursday by knocking out Toledo in a 9-1 victory fueled by a grand slam by senior Courtney Moore.

The Bulldogs are hosting the Fresno State Kick-Off Tournament where they will play eight more teams over the next nine days.

The five inning victory Thursday was highlighted by the third and fifth innings, which included the grand slam by Moore, a solo home run by senior first baseman Michelle Moses and a three-run homer by senior catcher Kaitlin Griffin.

"I swung at the first pitch and it was outside. I think I was just so anxious because we needed to score," Moore told gobulldogs.com. "I looked at coach and she told me to relax, and that was exactly what I needed. It was a 3-1 pitch, a hitter's count and my favorite count, and I felt like I got a lot of it."

The Bulldogs did give up one unearned run in the third and briefly trailed the Rockets before Moore put the ‘Dogs on top with two outs in the third.

Toledo finished 0-2 Thursday after suffering a loss to North Dakota in extra innings.

Fresno State plays North Dakota at 7 p.m. Friday and will face UC Riverside and Sacramento State Saturday.
