Sofia Vergara, Nick Loeb pursue parenthood, opt for surrogacy

Real-life is emulating TV, as Sofia Vergara's "Modern Family" character Gloria is pregnant this season, and Vergara and fiance Nick Loeb are hoping to soon be expecting, as well. In their case, though, they are using a surrogate, according to a report issued on Friday.

Vergara and Loeb were engaged in July of 2012.

Although the couple is using a surrogate mother, the baby will be biologically Vergara, 40, and 37-year-old fiance Loeb's. The host mother is reportedly a close girlfriend of Vergara's. The couple itself has not confirmed the news; instead the information came via a source close to Vergara. The source said:

A procedure has taken place, and Sofia and Nick will find out in a few weeks if it was successful, if the surrogate is pregnant, and if they will become parents.

Vergara already has a grown son, 21-year-old Manolo, from her marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Joe Gonzalez. The couple wed in 1991; they divorced in 1993.

She has long said she would love another child. While it's unclear why she and Loeb have chosen surrogacy, the New York Post, where the story first became public, implies that the choice was made because Vergara's career is skyrocketing. Not only does she co-star on the hit TV sitcom, "Modern Family," she has a K-Mart fashion line, and she is in talks with a number of movie producers for a number of upcoming roles.

In terms of recent films, Vergara has appeared in "The Three Stooges" (2012), and "Escape from Planet Earth" (2013). She has the films "The Smurfs 2," (animated, 2013) and "Machete Kills" (2013) coming up.

Vergara and Loeb have been dating for three years. They were engaged in front of friends and family as they visited the Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza during a trip to Mexico to celebrate her birthday (July 10) last summer.
