The city that never sleeps is at it again, only this time instead of riding the world of evil soft drinks, or stopping to feel up the occasional bosomy tourist with an all too familiar and routine stop and grope, City Hall is trying to the rid the streets of homophobia and cat calls.
Who cares about violent street crimes, gangs, rat infestations, out of control rent, pollution, smog, and drug dealing when there are more pressing issues at foot like construction workers whistling at ladies as they pass by, or those darn pesky street preachers and their constant bible thumping.
The newest weapon in New York's vast arsenal of nanny state weaponry is the new "Hollaback" smart phone app. In response to complaints from members of the homosexual community regarding offensive slurs they receive regarding their sexual preference, and their public illustration of that preference, the city of New York invested $20,000 of your hard earned tax dollars into an already existing smart phone app to combat an issue that only affects 3.6% of the cities total population.
Again there is no need to worry about muggings, assaults, rapes, the cities deficit, or pollution, rats, or really any major issue that effects lets say 90% of the cities population. Instead lets focus on issues that only impacts less then 4% of the population.
Now don't misunderstand me, racial or sexist slurs are an issue, but they are far from major issues. In the grand scheme of things that are currently impacting New York City, I would imagine that they are at the very bottom of the trash heap. These issues are probably sandwiched somewhere between Justin Bieber, 32 ounce sodas, and jorts.
While the Hollaback phone app is a good idea, it is none the less a social issue that should not be resolved by government. When government begins to legislate morality and etiquette we begin to get into that gray fascist area where Nazi Germany ventured back in the 1930's.
If the city begins to use this app to go after violators then who decides what is homophobic and against the law, and what is legal? For example to an ardent supporter of gay rights the bible, koran, or torah would be homophobic texts. Pastors, Rabbis, and Imams would be a kin to a Klansman, and a traditional church, temple, or mosque service that talks about homosexuality would be on the level of hate speech.
History has shown us that whenever government begins to legislate morality or social norms then bad things happen, and in a society that values individual and religious freedoms this seems like a dangerous path to take.
But hey what can you expect from a city that has effectively turned its back on individual freedoms and have openly embraced the Fascism. After all New York mayor thinks these simplicities of life are a serious health cracker and has already outlawed the 64 oz soft drink, extra large pizza, and has a daily policy of stop and fondle, whats to stop them from going even further?
