Soda and fruit drinks linked to depression: What to drink instead

Already linked to weight gain, sodas and fruit drinks now are getting the rap for their correlation with depression, reported Yahoo News on Jan. 9. A study of more than 260,000 people revealed the link between depression and soft drinks as well as fruit drinks. Released on Jan. 8, the study tracked the consumption of people between 50 and 71 years old.

Those who drank more than four sodas daily were 30 percent more apt to experience depression, while those who drank fruit punch had a 38 percent higher risk than those who skipped the sweet stuff. Think that diet sodas are exempt? Wrong. Diet sodas, low-calorie fruit punch and even iced teas are linked to an even higher risk of depression. Researchers theorize that the cause may be aspartame.
