I’m so excited to tell you about a new social outlet for homeschoolers 12+. At this age, it seems to become more important to have more friends and harder to find them, because everyone seems dispersed into different academic directions and some even start college classes.! Having gone through this time period with 2 teens already, I know there comes an age where these kids just need a little time away from the “little kids” as they like to call their siblings and younger friends sometimes, and just do something fun with friends closer to their age.
Learn Beyond The Book now has a social group for this age. It's a free group (whether the kids are enrolled at Beyond The Book or not). If your 12, 13, or 14 yo. has an 11 yo. friend who they want to invite as well and who are emotionally mature enough to be with kids this age, feel free to invite them too. If they have older friends who would enjoy being in this group, they are of course also welcome. I have 2 boys who are almost 2 years apart and the younger one always shared friends with the older and was totally on the same wavelength as them, so I understand that is a possibility, but please be mindful of the fact that we want this to be a social group of kids who are roughly at the same stage of emotional development as most 12-14yo. They are planning a monthly game/video game night and another meeting time during the month for another activity, e.g. ice skating, bowling, laser tag, hiking, and more.
Younger siblings and parents can meet in a separate unit or area at the same time, also hanging out and playing games or other activities, and then some of the parents would have a turn to enjoy each other’s company. We are meeting tonight at 7-10pm this Saturday night, Jan.19.
