Social Media Week (SMW) 2013 marked the fifth year SMW returned to New York, taking place on February 18-22, 2013. Social Media Week is an international event aimed to explore the social, cultural and economic impact of social media. This year SMW focused on the theme “Open & Connected: Principles for a Collaborative World.”
This year, SMW added a new feature for participants, with the introduction of the Buzz Band, allowing participants to check into events through Facebook with just the swipe of bracelets given to them. At the Global HQ, SMW introduced “Ideas Connected,” a state of the art, experiential space where participants were given the opportunity to connect with thought leaders, such as Susan Crawford, Ben Kaufman of Quirky, and Reddit's Alexis Ohanian. Ideas connected also offered master classes, networking lounges, collaborative workspaces and a simulcast lounge.
Events took at 5 official locations: Global HQ at Metropolitan Pavilion and 4 Content Hubs, Business & Entrepreneurship being the focus at Bloomberg, Society & Social Impact at 92Y Tribeca, Advertising & Marketing at JWT, and Culture & Lifestyle at Hearst Tower, in addition to independently events held throughout the city. During the five daylong event, more than 150 panels and presentations occurred, featuring with founders and executives from some up and coming tech companies. Some of the keynote speakers included: JWT CEO David Eastman, Dachis Group CEO Jeff Dachis, Warby Parker CEO Neil Blumenthal and Quirky CEO Ben Kaufman.
In addition to the keynote speakers and some phenomenal panels, some of the featured events included, a special announcement by Ford – unveiling a new contest for their 2014 Ford Fiesta Movement, interactive displays, Social Media Action Camp, a celebrity panel at Viacom and a Warby Parker interactive Google hangout for participants get fashion advice.
