Social media websites climb the rankings for unique visitors

The Internet Research Marketing Company, comScore, released this Tuesday the top 50 most visited websites in the United States (U.S). The report covers December 2012 to January 2013 that saw a spike in in unique visits to several different categories of websites, but with a significant growth for social media websites like LinkedIn and Pinterest.

LinkedIn's separation from Twitter has fueled its growth because its a unique and professional social job portal makeup. The platforms redesign along with easy customizations of profiles has allowed the website to become much more visible to the online networking world. The social network is currently ranked the 22nd most visited website ahead by four spots of Twitter.

The recent newcomer Pinterest, the pinboard-style photo sharing service, has once again moved up to the number 38th position. The results are nothing more than fantastic given its short time in operation and other social networks should become wary of this exponential growth every quarter.

“In January, Americans combatted their winter blues by researching and even booking future vacations at online travel sites,” said Jeff Hackett, executive vice president of comScore. “We also saw a very seasonal spike in the Career Services category, including Job Search, Training and Education, and Career Resource sites, as Americans looked for ways to grow their careers and expand their skill sets in 2013.”

In today's restructuring economy, social media websites will to a certain degree offer a window of opportunities to job seekers. LinkedIn's influence on the job market is crucial to its platform and its core business. More and more applicants that apply online can use a Linkedin Profile and upload it for a position they are interested in.

Pinterest use of images has proven to be an effective social network with lots to say. A service that has a larger proportion of users who are women to men whom definitely know the ropes and how to use it for almost every category imaginable.

The bragging rights do not just belong to Linkedin and Pinterest in this report. Google still commands the web with 191 million visitors along with Yahoo! Coming in second place with 187 million. Microsoft managed 170 million while Facebook attracted 146 million.

Social media is not just a trend or movement at the present time. It is a way of life that has unleashed a transformative effect on society and possibly almost every sector known to man. More than just a communications channel, but a tool with the essential ingredients for human beings to come together for different causes.
