Ariel Castro dead: Convicted Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro was found dead in his jail cell Tuesday night, ending his life just one month into his sentence, reports The Associated Press on Sept. 4 via Yahoo! News.
The 53-year-old rapist hung himself at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction facility, near Cleveland, taking his life and showing that the man loathed across the nation was unable to live in confinement – something that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight did for the better part of a decade.
As Americans wake up this morning to the news that Ariel Castro is dead, many are turning to social media to express their thoughts. Some are relieved; many are outraged that the Cleveland kidnapper and abuser will not suffer behind bars for the rest of his life.
Castro raped and tortured the young girls while keeping them locked inside of a home on Seymour Avenue in Cleveland, a house that was demolished last month by city contractors.
Over the years, Castro fathered a child with one of the girls and forced another to miscarry; he tied the girls down in chains and rags, abusing them verbally, mentally and physically.
Despite the abuse, the three girls remained resilient, courageous and hopeful that one day they would be freed from their captor.
“We said we'll all get out alive someday, and we did,” Michelle Knight said at Castro’s Aug. 1 sentencing hearing.
“You took 11 years of my life away, and I have got it back,” she said to the hushed courtroom, directing her words at Castro as he hung his head. “I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning.”
Now, the former Cleveland bus driver is being roundly condemned in social media for ending his life. Castro was sentenced in early August after pleading guilty to over 900 counts of rape and abuse. His punishment was to be life in prison, plus 1,000 years – a sentence designed to have a clear punitive impact.
Instead, Castro sits in a Cleveland morgue, having served barely one month for his unspeakable crimes.
“What does God think of you hypocritically going to church each Sunday and then coming home to torture us?” Knight previously said to Castro. “The death penalty would be the easy way out. You don't deserve that. We want you to spend the rest of your life in prison.”
Michelle Knight's wish dies with Castro.
Here is a sampling of the responses on Twitter:
“What a coward Ariel Castro is.”
“So Ariel Castro is dead in jail, hanged himself. Oops, my sympathy bag appears to be empty.”
“Ariel Castro kept those girls captive for 10 years, he couldn't even spend 5 weeks in jail.”
“Rest in hell.”
“He took the easy way out.”
