Over 30 Winter Olympics athletes will descend into the "City of Dreams" on Tuesday to participate in the U.S. Olympic Committee’s “100 Day Countdown” event in Times Square.
Representing Team USA, past Olympic medalists as well as promising medal hopefuls will celebrate this exciting kickoff – approximately 100 days before the 2014 Winter Olympics starts on February 7 in Sochi, Russia. Athletes will showcase their skills at several sports stations along the four-block, 45th-48th Street zone, where preparations are well underway as shown in this live cam in New York City.
During this ramp-up period to the Sochi Games, these world-class athletes are breaking away from their critical training to participate. Yet, all will certainly resume their pre-season practicing re-energized from this party, expected to attract over 100,000 fans.
The Winter Olympics, long the younger step-sister of the elder Summer Olympics, is amping in popularity as athletes and fans gravitate to these edgier, adrenaline-stoked sports.
Returning for another run at the podium are medalists: alpine skier Ted Ligety, short track speed skater C.R. Celski, figure skater Evan Lysacek, mogulist Hannah Kearney, halfpipe snowboarders Kelly Clark and Gretchen Bleiler, bobsledders Steve Holcomb and Elana Meyers, and hockey players Julie Chu and Hilary Knight.
Further, because the International Olympic Committee has recently stoked its schedule with even more dangerous sports, several rising elite athletes hope to win medals (in these new events): Sarah Hendrickson (women’s ski jumping), Chas Guldemond (snowboard slopestyle), Tom Wallisch (ski slopestyle), and Torin Yater-Wallace (ski halfpipe).
“We’re delighted to once again bring the excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to fans throughout the country through the 100 Day Olympic milestone in Times Square and the Road to Sochi Tour,” said USOC Chief Marketing Officer Lisa Baird.
This New York City celebration, running from 12 - 8:00 p.m., leads off a thirteen-stop, “Road to Sochi Tour” sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance. For more details, see this USOC press release (10/25/2013).
