As the Olympics are fast approaching Sochi, Russia is on most of the world's mind. Russia will be the host of the Olympic Games for the first time since the break up of the Soviet Union. The last Olympics held within Russian borders were the 1980 Winter Games in Moscow.

Sochi is a city in Krasnodar Krai, Russia located on the coast of the Black Sea. It is one of very few places in Russia with a subtropical climate, experiencing warm summers and mild winters. Average temperatures for a typical Sochi winter are in the 50 degree Fahrenheit range. The city itself stretches 90 miles along the black sea making it the second longest city in the world.

Sochi will be the warmest city to host the Olympic Winter Games. While most of the world is shoveling away at the snow in their driveway and praying for sunshine, Sochi will be asking for the opposite. Fortunately, the northern Greater Caucasus Mountain Range is a bit cooler, only an hour away from Sochi, and will be hosting most of the outdoor events. It has been said that The Russian Government will have spent over 51 billion dollars on these Olympic games, making them the most expensive Olympics to date.
By hosting The Winter Olympics, President Putin believes Russia will establish itself as a tourist destination. Sochi could be your next travel destination. It is located by the sea and by the mountains making it ideal for late spring travel. It has beautiful weather, great sights, and can be quite relaxing once the city has finished hosting the winter games!

Planning a vacation anytime soon? As you watch the Sochi games these next two weeks, keep Russia in mind!
