Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics medal count Day 15: USA still leads

The race for Olympic medals after the end of competition on Friday in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia continued and though the top of the medal race converged slightly, the United States still remained on top in total medals.

The top ten nations leading the total medal race as of the end of Friday’s events are the United States with 27 medals, the Russian Federation with 26 medals, Canada with 24 medals, the Netherlands and Norway with 22 medals each, Germany with 16 medals, France with 15 medals, Sweden with 14 medals, Austria with 12 medals and Switzerland with 11 medals.

The top ten nations leading the gold medal race are Norway with 10 gold medals, the United States, the Russian Federation and Canada with nine gold medals each, Germany with eight gold medals, the Netherlands and Switzerland with six gold medals each, Belarus with five gold medals and France and Poland with four gold medals each.

Medals awarded on Friday, with gold medal country winners in parenthesis, were in women’s slalom in alpine skiing (United States), women’s 4 x 6 km relay in biathlon (Ukraine), men’s curling (Canada), ladies’ ski cross in freestyle skiing (Canada), men’s 500 m short track (Russian Federation), women’s 1000 m short track (South Korea) and men’s 5000 m relay in short track (Russian Federation).

Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States won the gold medal in the alpine skiing women’s slalom. In the short track men’s 5000 m relay, the United States four-person team (Eduardo Alvarez, J.R. Celski, Chris Creveling and Jordan Malone) won the silver medal.

Non-medal events were held in men’s ice hockey, men’s speed skating and women’s speed skating.

Medal round events scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22 include competition in men’s slalom in Alpine skiing, men’s relay 4 x 7.5 km in biathlon, ladies’ 30 km mass start free in cross-country, the bronze medal game in men’s ice hockey, ladies’ parallel slalom snowboard, men’s parallel slalom snowboard, mean’s team pursuit speed skating and ladies’ team pursuit speed skating.
