Soccer season kicks off with win

The 2011-2012 Miami athletic season kicked off Friday with a resounding 4-0 win by the Miami soccer squad (1-0) over IUPUI (0-1) in Oxford. Kayla Zakrzewski and Katy Dolesh each scored a pair of goals for the 'Hawks while Allison Norenberg had an easy day in the net, stopping the only shot that was put on goal.

Miami dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting IUPUI 17-3. Zakrzewski gave Miami the early lead in just the 23rd minute, taking away a failed clear and burying it into the net. Three minutes later, Dolesh put Miami up 2-0 when she headed in a pass from Amanda Fillian. Outshooting the Jaguars 8-1 in the half, the Redhawks went into the intermission up 2-0.

The second half was much the same story, as Miami continued to control the flow of the game. Zakrzewski got her second score of the day in the 70th minute, as she took a feed from Jess Kodiak and chipped it in over the keeper. Once again, Dolesh followed Zakrzewski with a second goal of her own just a few minutes later. In the 75th minute it was Zakrzewski settling a loose ball following a free kick, and getting it to Dolesh who put it in the net for the final score of the match.

Opening weekend will conclude with a Sunday match against Morehead State at 1 p.m. in Oxford. The Eagles posted a 13-7-1 record last season, winning the Ohio Valley Conference for a third consecutive season.
