Happy Valentine's day. Sober and single on Valentine's day, not a lot of fun. Finding events that are alcohol and drug free is not difficult. 12-step organizations offer a free schedule of events, such as dances and potluck gatherings. Occasionally marathon meetings will have a pot luck for lunch or dinner. Those who are able bring their favorite dishes and everyone shares in the fun and fellowship.
No one has to spend Valentine's Day or Christmas alone. Sober events occur year round. 24-hour hotline numbers are available if you do not want to attend an event or cannot make it to a meeting. Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, churches, and non-12-step recovery programs provide 800 numbers to call.
There is no reason to be alone. Ever. If you have attended a few meetings and have a list of numbers from new friends, call them. Ask for a ride to a meeting or invite someone over for dinner. Ask a few friends to join you at the local restaurant to share dinner and talk.
Check your neighbourhood parks, find out if barbeques are available and have a picnic. Invite everyone at your favorite meeting, your support group and sponsor to bring their favorite dish. Don't forget the chairs, set up a circle and hold a meeting. Share your stories of Valentine's past, the good and the bad. Listen to others as they share their stories. Be your Valentine's.
