Lyons Press, an imprint of Globe Pequot Press is proud to anounce the Octobe 2013 release of SOAR: The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying, by Captain Tom Bunn (978-0-7627-8800-2; $18.95, Paperback). SOAR brings a unique and effective program that conquers flight anxiety from a seasoned airline captain and licensed therapist.
After serving in the Air Force for seven years, Captain Tom Bunn flew commercial jets for both Pan Am and United Airlines. After working with the original Fear of Flying program at Pan Am, Captain Bunn founded SOAR in order to develop more effective methods for dealing with anxious flyers, which led him to a license in therapy. Captain Bunn's techniques for dealing with flight anxieties go beyond meditation and exposure theray. He has a deep understanding of both the world of airplanes and of the inner working of the brain, and he explains both in a relatable tone that captivates the reader.
Bunn's approach is to show anxious flyers exactly why their brain is reacting to flight and how they can retrain the brain - before they again step onto an airplane - not to react when aloft. Thus, SOAR helps the reader understand why they have been scared, how to outsmart the brain-body reaction and end flight anxiety, claustrophobia, and panic. Also, Bunn shares specific techniques for anticipatory anxiety, execises to shift focus and therefore reduce stress about an upcoming flight.
This advanced method has been proven uniquely effective. Bunn has helped over 10,000 to overcome their fear of flying. Once an anxious flyer can stop the brain from reacting to the inescapable nature of an aircraft thousands of feet in the sky, he can relax, and even enjoy the flight, therefore opening up his access to the whole world.
Captain Tom Bunn has flown many different airplanes including the Air Force's first supersonic jet fighter, for which he developed a safety device. He worked on the original Fear of Flying program at Pan Am and founded SOAR in 1982. He has a Masters Degree from Fordham Universit and did postgraduate study at The Gestalt Center of Long Island, the New York Training Institute for Neurolinguistic Programming, and The Masterson Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. He is a licensed therapist.
