So you thought you could spell spelling bee

The Alley Charleston will host the first annual So You Thought You Could Spell Spelling Bee on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 pm.The Alley wants to bring awareness to "Be a Mentor" organization. This organization matches children in need with mentors in the Charleston area.

This will be a free event that will feature some of the city's top local celebrities and community leaders who will have to successfully spell a series of words for a live audience. It is modeled after the Scripps National Spelling Bee, but there will be adult contestants with a light and fun atmosphere. There will be several rounds to give participants a chance to be crowned the winner.

Writer and humor blogger Bryce Donovan will MC the event.

Some confirmed spellers include: Stephanie Barna, Charleston City Paper; Darcy Shankland, Charleston magazine; Colleen Condon, Charleston City Council; Ayoka Luca, Stylist, Blogger, and Charleston Fashion Week Director; Steve Palmer, Indigo Road Group; and Chris Frasier, Charleston County School District.
