Technically this column (if you will indulge me by calling it that) is supposed to be about Detroit comedy. However, Detroit comics travel far and wide to tell jokes. That being said, this location you might not have been too may be closer than some of the regular comedy spots in your area.
Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It's not even in the country, and completely different (only one murder so far this year), but it's so close it might as well be included in the metro-Detroit bubble. Besides that, they are damn friendly people.
For the longest time (well 9 months) I could not go to Canada because of a DUI 8 years prior, but recently I was given a one year permit. Last week I made my way to Leo's Komedy Korner in Windsor right on Ottawa street near Hall. It's located above Tops. It's modest in size but has the feel of a big city hidden gem. I went there to check out a fundraiser show for a group my girlfriend is involved in.
It was a packed house and a great crowd. They put up nine comics, which is alot of bang for your buck. For some reason I figured comedy in Canada was cleaner, but from what I saw that's not the case. Comics of all kinds are welcomed. I suppose that was just my stereotype, the innocent Canadian ha.
Anyway the point here is that if you're a Detroit comic you should cross the border and check out Leo's Komedy Korner. I met Leo and he is a great guy, and also a hilarious stage veteran. If your're just a comedy fan I urge you to give this place a try. The prices are reasonable, the comics are funny, and it's located just a few minutes from downtown Detroit.
