The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics may be just eight weeks away, but the real competition began Monday at Dolce Vita.
The 55+ active adult community in Apache Junction, Ariz. is hosting the 11th Annual Snowman Classic Shuffleboard Tournament from Dec. 9-11. The sanctioned shuffleboard tournament will feature 56 male and female entries competing against each other from 13 different 55-and-older communities scattered throughout the East Valley. Three sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. and at 1 p.m. The Snowman Classic’s consolation and championship rounds will be held Wednesday at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.
Shuffleboard is a game where participants use broom-shaped paddles to glide weighted pucks down an elongated court to a triangular marked area to score points. It may sound tame, but over the years at Dolce Vita it’s become a take-no-prisoners sport—often with trash talking and light-hearted ribbing between players.
With last year’s winner out due to health reasons, the coveted honor to claim the title of the best shuffleboard player in the East Valley is now up for grabs.
“Shuffleboard is one sport where men and women are in head-to-head competition with each other,” said Snowman Classic coordinator Bob Kucharczyk. “It’s a game of skill and expertise, so your sex, personal fitness and your age doesn’t really matter. The Snowman Classic brings together the very best shuffleboard players in the East Valley. For this tournament players bring their A-game.”
“This competition has become a tradition at Dolce Vita,” said Pat Eyrich, Dolce Vita’s director of residents & facilities. “We always have great competition between players and communities, and Dolce Vita is the perfect place to hold the tournament.”
The four finalists in both the Consolation and Championship rounds win a trophy. First place winners receive an engraved trophy with their name that they can keep for a year to brag about and show friends.
