First there was flooding, and now snow is looking to impact East Tennessee and the Southern Appalachians. As a low pressure system tracks to the south and east of East Tennessee, moisture and cold air will filter in. As this occurs, rain will change to snow on Thursday afternoon.
Snowfall totals will range from 2-5" around Knoxville and the Central Valley, a coating to 2" near Chattanooga, 3-6" in Northeast Tennessee, and 4-8" around the Tennessee Great Smoky Mountains. Expect the changeover from rain to snow to occur around 3:00pm on Thursday afternoon with the snow ending between around 8:00pm in Knoxville and around 10:00pm in the mountains of East Tennessee. For this reason, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for nearly all of East Tennessee with a Winter Storm Warning for the mountainous terrain.
The forecast continues to change rapidly and will continue to develop throughout the day on Thursday. Stay tuned to Examiner.com and the East Tennessee Storm Team for the very latest on this developing weather situation.
