Snowdrops are a welcome sight come early spring

The only snow Florence, South Carolina may see this year will be growing from the ground not falling from the sky.

The Snowdrop (Lalanthus nivalis) bulb has long slender leaves with small white tulip type flowers that hang down from the stem. This bulb blooms the same time of year as the common yellow Daffodil and the leaves of both plants look very similar. These plants complement one another when over planted in your perennial flower beds.

The three most common Snowdrop bulbs are the Garden Snowdrop, the Viridapicis and the Flore Pleno. They differ in shape and coloration of the flower. The Garden Snowdrop is white while the Viridapicis is white with green spots at the tip of each petal. The Flore Pleno has a white double flower.

The Snowdrop is a relative to the ever popular Amaryllis bulb that is spectacular when forced into bloom indoors. While Amaryllis bulbs come in many vivid colors the Snowdrop is always white.
