Snow update: Eldora and Echo Mountain stock up, Beaver Creek opens more terrain

If you’re in Denver or anywhere along and east of the Front Range you know we’re getting blasted, but even more snow is falling in the foothills, with huge benefits for local mountains Eldora and Echo Mountain.

Echo Mountain reported exactly two feet of new snow this morning. The ski area’s total has since swelled to 40 inches and is likely to reach the four-foot mark and beyond before all is said and done. Eldora reported 18 inches this morning, and its latest report puts it at 24 inches.

Sure, Eldora’s behind Echo Mountain by a fairly wide margin, but who’s complaining? Perhaps the people stuck in Boulder Canyon when it was closed for about four hours. It’s open now, but make sure you check in at www.cotrip.org before you go anywhere.

And, as you probably know already, and since this a big upslope, the snow basically ends at the Continental Divide. Monarch should end up somewhere in between. The far southwest mountains – namely Purgatory, Silverton, Telluride and Wolf Creek – got a nice shot last night and this morning and now have clear skies.

Despite not getting much from this system, Beaver Creek just announced that ski patrol has been preparing double-black and extreme terrain in Royal Elk Glade and Upper Stone Creek Chutes for all you double-blackers. Portions of terrain in these areas will open for the season tomorrow.

The resort reports that January snowfall was five percent above the monthly 11-year average, which was quite helpful in bringing the resort tantalizingly close to 100 percent open at 1,712 acres of terrain and 25 lifts in operation. For terrain updates visit www.beavercreek.com, or stop into any patrol outpost on the mountain.

We’ll provide a full and updated snow and terrain report Sunday morning, with the two-day snow report, road conditions and a forecast early tomorrow morning. We’re hopeful that we can actually get out of Denver tomorrow.
