Snow Storms cause Travel Delays in Pacific Northwest

Back to back winter snow storms are causing many travel delays in western Washington and Oregon.  The onslaught of a series of snow storms has travelers stuck on highways and at airports.  The snow is expected to continue through Wednesday and into Thursday as the storm moves through Washington and into Idaho.

Meteorologist Dustin Guy, from Seattle’s office of the weather service, explained that the precipitation from the south and west are combining with cold air from Canada which is causing this winter event.  Repeated snow storms have led to many traffic accidents and delays on area highways and motorists are cautioned to limit their travels if possible.   The Pacific Northwest region is known for beautiful mountains and rolling hills that unfortunately can become very treacherous terrain during freezing temperatures and snow storms.  Officials warn motorists and pedestrians to be wary of slippery conditions and expect the unexpected.  Several spin outs and accidents have been reported.  Pedestrians are also cautioned about the dangers of walking on icy roadways and sidewalks and watch for children sledding out onto streets.

Early Wednesday morning snowfall reached Kitsap County on the Olympic Peninsula.  In many areas more than 3 inches had fallen by 9 a.m.  As snowfall continues 5 – 10 inches is expected in and around Olympia and the Hood Canal.  Approximately 4 – 8 inches is expected to fall around Greater Seattle and the Seattle – Tacoma Airport.  If the snow reaches 7 inches this winter storm could rank as one of the worst storms since 1940.

High wind warnings are also in effect along coastal regions of Washington and Oregon.  Communities are encouraged to be prepared for power outages.

Due to the ongoing nature of the snow storm travelers are encouraged to check ahead if they have plans to fly out Seattle – Tacoma Airport.  Many flights have been canceled and there are delays at this time for flights leaving for Newark NJ and Phoenix AZ.
