An unexpectedly early arrival of the snowstorm that blanketed much of the area on Sunday, December 8, 2013 forced officials to cancel the annual Tomes River Jingle Bell Run.
The races were scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. But by 1 p.m.. several inches had already accumulated on the streets in Toms River. The same snow storm caused the cancellation of the Memphis Marathon.
According to Race Director, Larry Perlberg of the Ocean Running Club the decision was made in conjunction with the Toms River Police Department. The roads were just too slippery and dangerous both for the runners and people driving to the race. Roads were extremely slick and on the Garden State Parkway \traffic was crawling along at about 15 to 25 miles an hour with near white out conditions.
The cancellation did not deter several of the volunteers from the Ocean Running Club who were dressed for the occasion to do an informal run. They were in day 11 of a running streak to run every day between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
There was no decision on the possibility of rescheduling the event. The organizers from the Rotary Club of Toms River will be releasing more information to all who per-registered.
