Snow emergency is lifted in DC as workers clear massive amounts of snow

The District of Columbia Government opened on two-hour delay today due to inclement weather in the DC Metro area. Eligible employees were given the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework. DCPS schools are closed as workers continued to clear city sidewalks and streets for safe passage. The Snow Emergency has been discontinued.

City workers were clearing city sidewalks; however, many private property sidewalks were not being cleared as residents were unable to pass in front of many houses. The sight of residents walking on paved city streets because they could not pass private property sidewalks was both dangerous and alarming.

The DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR) announced that the District Government will operate on a two-hour delayed schedule on Friday, February 14, 2014.

As a result, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will operate on the following schedule:

  • The 28th Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet Friday morning session only has been cancelled. The Friday afternoon session, and all Saturday and Sunday sessions, will proceed as scheduled. Any volunteers scheduled for Friday morning should report to Takoma after 9 am.
  • All Aquatic facilities that hold morning swim hours will open at 9 am. Marie Reed and Ferebee-Hope will open at 3 pm.
  • Administrative offices will open at 10:30 am.
  • The Cooperative Play program is cancelled.
  • Recreation centers will operate as follows:
    • The following sites will be closed:
      • Mitchell Park Recreation Center
      • Rose Park Recreation Center
    • The following sites will open at 10:30 am:
    • Bald Eagle Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Chevy Chase Community Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Columbia Heights Community Center
    • Deanwood Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Emery Recreation Center
    • Ferebee Hope Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Fort Stanton Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Fort Stevens Recreation Center
    • Fort Stevens Senior Center
    • Guy Mason Recreation Center
    • Hillcrest Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Kennedy Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • King Greenleaf Recreation Center
    • Lamond Recreation Center
    • North Michigan Park Recreation Center
    • Park View Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Riggs LaSalle Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Rosedale Community Center
    • Sherwood Recreation Center (Fun Day Site)
    • Southeast Tennis and Learning Center

  • All other sites will open at 11:30 am.
  • All sites will close at 8 pm.
