Snow days catch up to local school systems

Fredericksburg area school systems are looking at potential snow make up days after the rash of snow days and delays due to the recent snowfall totals. Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties are considering adding on time to the school day or using scheduled student holidays as make up days. Fredericksburg City Schools are also looking into make up options if more snow days are called.

According to Virginia’s Department of Education, Virginia students are required to sit for 900 school hours in a year. Local school divisions are scrambling to see where seat hours stand after all snow make up days are used. Some schools are looking to attend classes later in the day, replace holidays, or even attend on Saturdays. Past years have seen school administration petition the Department of Education for waivers to be exempt from making up more than the set snow days.

According to the Free Lance Star, Spotsylvania County Schools have already posted new make up dates. The list can be viewed here.
