Snow Day Update: Good snow, bad roads

So far so good… and bad. The good is the amount of snow that has fallen thus far in most mountain locations, especially along I-70 and north. If you’re a Copper Mountain Snow Day pass holder, you’re in luck. According to the Copper Mountain snow stake, they’re at almost six inches so far and counting. Very nice.

The bad has been the problems on the roads leading up to the resorts. I-70 is closed westbound for about 11 miles from Rooney Road, which is basically at Highway 93 and I-70 near the Morrison exit – to Floyd Hill because of “severe” weather conditions. It’s been closed there since 2:42 this afternoon, so keep that in mind and check back at www.cotrip.org if you’re planning to head up this evening and tomorrow morning early.

US 6 in Clear Creek Canyon was closed earlier, as was CO 199 northbound east of Black Hawk and Central City. That was bad, but it also indicates that there’s good snow coming down at the resorts on this side of the Continental Divide, namely Eldora and Echo Mountain.

Tomorrow should be a nice powder day wherever you go, but that also means hellacious driving tomorrow morning. I suggest you leave no later than 6:30 to avoid the worst of it and be sure to check www.cotrip.org to make sure nothing’s closed.

It’s expected to snow all night long and into tomorrow morning. Sometime late morning it should clear out, but we’d rather it didn’t and hung around a little longer. Our bets for the best snow are Copper Mountain and west, the Winter Park area and the previously mentioned east-of-the-Divide areas. Check back early tomorrow morning for the latest Colorado Ski and Snow Report for the totals, any road alerts and the latest forecast for this coming week.
