Snow comes to Johnstown in time for the 2012 Special Olympics Winter Games

All winter long here in Johnstown, we have been waiting on winter.  There were many comments going around about it.  Some would say, “We’re going to get hammered when it comes.”  Others would say, “We are going to have snow into May.”  Well the snow has returned and just in time for the annual Pennsylvania Special Olympics Winter Games.

While having snow and winter weather is not that important for the skating events held inside, it is essential for the outdoor events.  The major concerns for lack of snow were for the cross-country ski and snowshoe events at Blue Knob.  When asked about this last week, Nicole Jones, the Communications Director of Special Olympics Pennsylvania, responded, “Lack of snow is always a concern, but Blue Knob does continue to make snow, so we are hopeful conditions will be ready for competition.”

All concerns are all gone with this weekend’s snow.  The recent snow added over 9 inches of snow at Hidden Valley Resort.  Hidden Valley is the venue for the Alpine skiing events on Monday and Tuesday.  And at Blue Knob Resort they have received about 7 inches.  This along with a slight chance of snow showers through Tuesday and cold temperatures, should ensure enough snow for the competition.

So get out there Johnstown and cheer on these athletes as they compete.  Competition takes place on Monday and Tuesday at four venues in the Johnstown area.  Check out the Special Olympics Pennsylvania website for a full schedule of events or check out this Examiner.com article.
