Snow and blowing snow today, brutal cold returning next week

A strong cold front will move across the area today. Snow this morning will gradually taper to snow showers this afternoon after the passage of the front. The snow could be locally heavy and gusty winds will cause significant blowing and drifting of the snow.

The snow showers will transition to lake effect snow showers tonight as arctic air spills across the lake.

There is a chance of snow showers Sunday morning, then another clipper will bring another round of steady snow to the area Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Temperatures will rise ahead of the clipper on Sunday, then another surge of arctic air will overspread northeastern Ohio Sunday night and Monday in the wake of the system.

Snow showers will linger across the snow belt on Monday, otherwise it will be partly sunny.

Here is the forecast: For today, snow this morning, tapering to snow showers this afternoon. Widespread blowing snow. Highs will reach the low 20s. Temperatures will fall sharply this afternoon. Winds SW 15-25 mph with higher gusts. Wind chills -5 to -15.

Tonight, mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers along with widespread blowing snow. Lows will be around 0. Winds W/NW 15-25 mph with higher gusts. Wind chills -15 to -25.

Sunday, a chance of snow showers during the morning, then snow likely during the afternoon along with areas of blowing snow. Highs in the low 20s. Winds NW/S 10-20 mph. Wind chills -15 to -25.

Sunday night, snow likely with a low around 10.

Monday, a chance of snow showers with highs in the low teens.

Looking ahead: A potent shot of arctic air will spread across the region Monday night through Wednesday. It will be partly cloudy through the period with a slight chance of snow showers. Lows Monday night will be around -10 with highs on Tuesday 0 to 5 above. Lows Tuesday night will be -10 to -15 with highs on Wednesday 5 to 10 above.

Clouds will increase Wednesday night ahead of another clipper system. Lows will be around 0. There is a chance of snow on Thursday with highs recovering to the mid to upper teens.
