Snoop Dogg, and B.OB. shake the Vanderbilt Quake concert

The 9th Annual Vanderbilt Quake concert  highlighted great talent with performances from Playboy Tre, Sonny Bonoho, B.O.B. a surprise performance from Franklin native Hayley Williams of Paramore, Passion Pit, Mac Shawn, DPG, and the main attraction legendary West coast rapper Snoop Dogg.

The night was opened up with a  nice performance from Playboy Tre, who enlightened the crowd by letting us know he derived his rap name from watching too much pornography growing up.  Then, Sonny Bonoho offered an assist as Playboy Tre’s hype man which took the crowd up a notch.

Then, the crowd rose to their feet and were at fulll attention when the planet of ATL arrived with the highly ranked #9 emcee for MTV, B.O.B.  He of course provided a great show  displaying his musical talents in playing the guitar and performing hits from his Adventures of B.OB album like “Magic,”  “Bet I”, “I’ll Be in The Sky,” “Nothing on You,”  “My Shades” and a great surprise performance with “Airplanes.”

B.O.B.  had the pre-recorded version of Airplanes first, then he stopped his band asking the crowd, “We’re in Tennessee right?”  Then  Hayley Williams  appeared from the back of the stage  serving as the icing on the cake and offering a historical performance.

The crowd erupted at this point. It was the first time they performed together  since the MTV Video Music Awards. B.O.B. thrived in capturing his audience and receiving full participation from the crowd.

It was obvious, whomever performed after him would be a hard act to follow. Of course, electronic/pop band Passion Pit of Cambridge, Massachusetts were up for the challenge as they had the crowd in a zone. Although, half the audience seemed clueless, the Vandy students were moved by the performance.

After, all the great young talent had graced the stage the moment of truth finally came when the stage was set up for Snoop Dogg’s show. Before Snoop hit the stage, his cousin MacShawn100 hyped the crowd up with new West Coast anthem and lingo which happened to be the title for his first single, “And You Do Know That.”

( I must admit the lyrics were catchy and contagious. The next morning after the concert I woke up singing the song.)

Now, it was finally time for the King of West coast rap to rock the Quake concert and you do know that!  The DJ started to play the beat of the Chronic 2001 anthem “Next Episode,” at that moment it was clear the Doggfather had arrived the smoke emerged from the stage. The '6 3"  LBC  rapper  took the stage and immediately had the crowd rocking, screaming, dancing, and reciting the words to his songs.

It was a bittersweet moment to see the 39 year old legend live still doing what he loves, after 17 years of being a top contender in the music industry.  Snoop Dogg wore a Tennessee Titan Chris Johnson jersey Adidas suit and shoes, and of course he had bling as well, and his signature pigtails with clear balls at the end.

There was not one person in their seat during this portion of the show, the whole gym was on their feet and vibin’ with Snoop.  He even brought out surprises of his own by having DPG members Daz and Kurupt perform classic hits with him.

He delivered cuts from his 1993 debut Doggystyle with a dedication with his song “Gin and Juice” to the audience members who were toddlers during his reign with the album. Snoop dropped verses from “Who Am I” ( What’s My Name) with assistance from the audience, and “Nuthin’ But a G Thang.”

On a more serious note, he included his good friend Tupac into the show with a special tribute in playing “Gangsta Party” and incorporating the crowd participation. The crowd held up 2 fingers to represent Tupac and chanted “Tupac!”

In the middle of his show, he turned the channel with more current songs. Of course, the the younger crowd would know his new material .

He delivered some of his recent cuts like: “Drop It Like It’s Hot” which had the ladies dropping it, and  his song he deemed he wanted to sing for the ladies “Sensual Seduction,” and he had to give us “Gangsta Luv” and “I Wanna Rock” from his current album Malice in Wonderland.

Snoop left the stage at midnight offering three words from his popular online channel West TV: “Peace, love and soul!”  He was contagious and we felt the love from his show.

Overall, this was a spectacular event with true showmanship from all the artists who graced the stage and history for Nashville. The show was worth attending and if you missed out, you will definitely want to make your way to attend the next Vanderbilt concert.

Stay tuned for more coverage, exclusive interviews, and pictures from the concert! And you do know that!
