The year in review for the Sense About Science, a U.K.-based charity with over 5,000 scientists, isn’t too pleased with a few of Hollywood’s biggest names. Releasing its annual Celebrities and Science list for 2011 on Tuesday, some of the things celebrities said over the past year have gotten them at odds with the scientists around the world.
Snooki from Jersey Shore appears to be one of the biggest offenders. Telling the world that the ocean is salty because of whale sperm apparently had some eye rolling from oceanographers. Add to that Simon Cowell’s claim that his concoction of Vitamins C, B12 and magnesium taken intravenously has him feeling younger and many scientists are sighing in disappointment knowing the fans are listening.
Another big offender in 2011 is Bill O’Reilly who apparently forgot about the moon’s forces on the ocean. On camera the talk show host and commentator shared he didn’t know why the tide goes in and out stating "You can’t explain that. You can’t explain why the tide goes in." However, grade school children learn daily this simple natural progression.
While the celebrities aren’t scientists, thankfully those who know science are happy to point out the errors. And save all of the fans who watch celebrities a tad too close and consider everything a star says as absolute. Take a look at the list of celebrities who have misspoken over 2011 about science and stay away from the water if you’re not sure how the tide works.
