Snodgrass named Big Ten freshman of the year Tuesday

According to Rita Mingo of the Calgary Herald, Calgary-raised Brooklynn Snodgrass has been named the Big Ten freshman of the year in women's swimming on Tuesday.

Snodgrass, who competes for the University of Indiana in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the United States, won the women's 100 yard backstroke and women's 200 yard backstroke at the Big Ten Conference Swimming Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Snodgrass, who was also on All-Big Ten First All-Star team, beat Kelsey Moran of Ohio State by 0.53 seconds in the women's 100 yard backstroke and beat teammate Cynthia Pammett of the University of Indiana by 1.81 seconds to win the women's 200 yard backstroke.

Snodgrass, who is 18 years old, was born in Saskatchewan, attended Calgary's National Sports School and was taught by former Canadian Olympic swim coach Dave Johnson at the Cascade Swim Club in Calgary.

Snodgrass will now compete at the 2013 NCAA Swimming Championships in Indianapolis.
