The New York-based series with the working title "Mulaney" is based on the life of the stand-up comic and former "Saturday Night Live" writer who will write and star in the comedy. It follows aspiring comedian John (Mulaney) coming of age under the influence of his boss (Martin Short), his roommates and his neighbors.

Pedrad, Gould and Smith were part of cast in the original pilot when the project was being developed at NBC, but will now have slightly different roles for the new incarnation on Fox.

Gould will play Mulaney's colorful, gay neighbor Oscar, Smith will play Mulaney's roommate Motif, an experienced comedian and ladies' man, while Pedrad will play Jane, a personal trainer who is also one of Mulaney's roommates. She played a grade school teacher in the NBC pilot.

Pearlman ("Community") is the only new addition, playing Andre Van Horn, a stubborn but energetic 29-year-old trust fund baby who does everything grandly.

Short was previously cast as Lou Cannon, Mulaney's over-the-top boss who was a major stand-up comedian in the 1980s and '90s and now hosts a game show, reprising his role from the original pilot.

The production schedules for "Mulaney" and "SNL" do not conflict, so Pedrad can continue to work on both shows if she chooses. She is currently the sketch comedy series's longest-running tenured female cast member following the departures of Kristen Wiig and Abby Elliott in recent seasons.

The multi-camera comedy executive produced by "SNL" boss Lorne Michaels was picked up by Fox with a six-episode order in October for fall 2014.
