SNL interpreter skit: Fake interpreter debacle a hit, parody of Mandela service

An SNL interpreter skit is making people laugh all across the U.S. this week, as SNL decided to make a parody of the “fake” interpreter who made off-key signs at the memorial service following the recent death of Nelson Mandela. The video is swiftly making the rounds online over the debacle, and viewers are saying that it’s crazy to think that this spoof really isn’t that far off the mark of what really happened with the schizophrenic sign language “expert” last week. WebProNews shares the details this Monday, Dec. 16, 2013.

The SNL interpreter skit comes at a time that many citizens across the globe are still mourning the tragic loss of Nelson Mandela, but both the deaf and others were recently shocked at the real-life debacle of what happened with the sign language interpreter at the peaceful man’s memorial service. Thamsanga Jantjie says he has gone to school specialized for the deaf and is skilled in the use of sign language, but the South African actually used bogus signs throughout the service.

Now, Jantjie is adding that he suffers from schizophrenia, and during the speech, the dubbed fake interpreter was having insane visions of flying angels coming into the stadium, preventing him from signing properly. Of course, SNL decided to make a skit of this interpreter’s debacle, and the result is very funny.

“There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation,” Jantjie said. “I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on. I am very sorry, it’s the situation I found myself in…life is unfair. This illness is unfair. Anyone who doesn’t understand this illness will think that I’m just making this up.”

“Saturday Night Live” decided to focus their skit with the man making the incorrect signs while President Obama spoke, eliciting laughs everywhere. The popular late night show also mocked President Obama’s recent selfie with the Danish Prime Minister.

Did you find the SNL interpreter skit of the improper signing at Nelson Mandela's service as funny as much of the nation is hyping the clip to be this Monday?
