Saturday Night Live took its viewers to Prince George Community College in Maryland for a speech by President Barack Obama – played by Jay Pharoah – for a speech by the president regarding the impending Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, which begins – in part – on Tuesday. The opening skit on Saturday’s show did a decent job for the many persons opposed to Obamacare, as the skit hit many of the programs’ feared-negatives, according to NBC on Sunday.
In the skit, Pharoah opens by saying that many are confused by the law, which is true. In response to the criticism, he says he is presenting regular Americans to explain how the Affordable Care Act will change their lives for the better. Then, they came out one by one to ridicule the program in comedic fashion.
The parade of regular Americans began with an alleged sales clerk who says she’s psyched for Obamacare. She says that now that she has Obamacare, she can get sick all the time. She boasts about free medicine and says she quit washing her hands.
One of the best parts of the skit was when a father and son come out. The father degrades the son for being a lazy, good-for-nothing loser. He said that they told his son he had to get a job if he wanted health insurance – but, Obama changed all that. The father states the obvious which is that now the son doesn’t have to lift a finger to have health coverage. The son responds to his father calling him a loser by saying, “If I’m a loser, how come I have health care?”
Beyond that, there was a brief appearance by a character playing Ted Cruz who yelled about socialism. An outrageous doctor told the audience to stop putting things up their damn butts. Following, a character told about a cancer patient using meth.
The 7-minute skit was another of the famous political openings of the comedy show which recently began a new season.
