Work of Art: The Next Great Artist "Kitsch Me If You Can," Season 2 Premiere, 9/8C Bravo. Bravo’s creative art competition series Work of Art returns tonight with 14 gifted, up-and-coming artists who will compete for a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum and a cash prize of $100,000. The show aims to discover new talent and reveal the seldom-seen artistic process.
In the first challenge "kitsch” is the focus as the contestants are asked to turn kitschy art into masterpieces. The artists must use pieces of "bad" art (think dogs playing various games, velvet, paint & ugly statues) as their canvas. Mentor Simon de Pury explains that in order to reach the top of the art world, they must start at the bottom. The Work of Art judges (China Chow, Jerry Saltz and Bill Powers) are looking for the artist that distinguishes themselves from the group by turning their “abomination into a masterpiece.” The guest judge for episode one is photographer Mary Ellen Mark.
Meet the Judges: Host/Judge: China Chow - China Chow is the child of late model/designer Tina Chow, a fashion icon of the '80s and jewelry designer, who died of AIDS in 1992, and restauranteur Michael Chow of the famous Mr. Chow restaurants. Judge: Jerry Saltz - Senior Art Critic New York Magazine. Judge: Bill Powers - Half Gallery. Mentor: Simon de Pury - Phillips de Pury & Company.
