never done." The experience will be incredible for Avatar fans as it will be an entirely new experience showcasing how the film could have been. And here's a little bonus for all of you who cannot get enough of Pandora and the Na'vi.
Avatar 2: The Sequel?
James Cameron made mention of doing a sequel previously, especially now that the foundation of Pandora has been set. In a L.A. Times Hero Complex interview, Cameron revealed that the sequel will focus on Pandora's ocean. He stated:
Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.
The sequel continues Cameron's environmental message to make people conscientious of the dire state of Earth's lands and oceans. He hopes to use the films to promote a greener Earth. In a possible third film, Cameron hopes to focus on the Alpha Centauri AB system. Alpha Centauri is a trinary star system and Alpha Centauri A is the sun for Pandora. It is the closest stellar neighbor to Earth, outside of the solar system.
In an interview by ComingSoon.net with Avatar producer Jon Landau, he confirms the Avatar sequel as well and said:
Our pressure about an 'Avatar' sequel is self-imposed. We've always said that if the public wanted a sequel that we would do a sequel. That having been said, in my opinion, Jim has done two sequels in his career, and both times, he has at least equaled if not surpassed the original movie. We're only going to do it when we have a piece of material, a script, that we believe will be at least as entertaining and unique as the first movie was.
However, do not expect the sequel, Avatar 2 to be released any time soon. James Cameron told Collider.com that it will be at least another three to three and a half years and that is if he started working on the sequel today. It takes a long time to make a film James Cameron-perfection style. Realistically speaking, since he is currently busy with Titanic 3D, it could be another four or five years at least. James Cameron sums it up:
People will have forgotten about Avatar, by the time we get a sequel done, and then they’ll go, “Oh, Avatar. Yeah, that would be cool.” It’s not like 'Iron Man 2,' coming out the year after 'Iron Man 1.' It ain’t going to work that way.
For those of you who fear Avatar withdrawal, James Cameron will be writing an Avatar novel, which will be a prequel to Avatar. The novel will be a backstory providing insight into each of the character's past and how their separate lives intertwined leading to the mission aboard the spacecraft on Pandora.
In August 2010, look for Avatar 3D to be re-released in theaters. It will include the never-before-seen six-minutes extra footage seamlessly incorporated into the film. Right now Weta Digital is finishing that project, along with working on the extras for Avatar Ultimate Edition.
If that still does not cure your Avatar blues, then head over to your local AMC Entertainment theater now to return to Pandora when you watch Avatar in IMAX 3D again. Check for Avatar IMAX 3D showtimes in New York and other locations.
