Snapped pole causes Vigo County School Board to adopt emergency resolution

The Vigo County School Board approved a resolution that declared an emergency situatios exists at Vigo North. The resolution, which was adopted at Monday night's school board meeting, allows the corporation to forgo the normal bidding process.

The school board drafted the resolution after Vigo North staff discovered a snapped pole on the school's baseball diamond. A late January storm had caused the poll to topple onto the field. School board members recommended that the custodial staff inspect all of the light poles on the baseball diamond to make sure they do not represent a safety hazard.

If the inspections reveal that there are other unsound poles, the corporation will replace them with longer-lasting metal versions. Vigo North will not be able to use the lumber, according to the Vigo North principal.

“They will be around a lot longer than any of us,” said Tanoos, answering a question about how long the poles will last.
