First Facebook, then Twitter, now Snapchat! So what is this new tech trend? Snapchat is one of the latest crazes in social media where the users of this app take photos, add text and drawings, record videos, and send them to who you want.
The photographs and videos that are sent are called "Snaps". Now, I think that using the word Snap to describe the photos and videos etc., is a play on the word snapshot (for pictures), but also the fact that after the data is sent, there is a time limit for how long recipients can view the Snaps. That time limit can range from 1 up to 10 seconds, and afterwards, the images will be hidden from the recipient's device, and also deleted from Snapchat's servers.
So what's the appeal of Snapchat? Why is this so popular now and why? Well, in chatting with my children, it's more about sharing a moment when you can't be there with someone, like living in the moment; whether you are making someone laugh or just sharing something with someone that you think they will like. It's about being social and going beyond just talk and text, and this app helps to facilitate this type of communication.
The way things are now, it's probably how we will be communicating the most in the near future. Are you on board, or would you rather pick up your cell, and just dial someone and talk? I’m about living in the moment, but I'm not sure if I will be Snap-chatting on a regular basis!
