Snake eats crocodile: 10' python swallows croc whole

In Australia, a large snake eats a croc and the epic duel is captured on tape Sunday, according to a Mar. 3 BBC News report. Video stills show a 10-foot python eating a crocodile in Queensland Lake after fighting the scaly reptile for hours. The snake devoured the hapless Aussie crocodile whole and paused to allow nature to do its job.

Photos of the snake eating the crocodile, arguably, settled the debate over which predator would win in a heads-up smack-down.

The snake was seen fighting a crocodile in Lake Moondarra, near Mount Isa by local, Tiffany Corlis, who was eating breakfast when a big fuss about the battle began raging.

Corlis grabbed her camera and raced off in the direction of canoeists who pointed her to a fight between a crocodile and python in the lake. By the time she arrived, locals say the duel had been going on for about three hours in the morning. In fact, it had just begun to suffocate the tiny victim.

Witnesses to the reptilian battle say the snake stalked and wrapped its coils around the unsuspecting croc and killed it. However, before eating its 3-foot-long prey, the crocodile up a fight in trying to keep its head above water. In the end, size won out over the much smaller prize.

When you actually looked at the snake, you could actually see the crocodile's ridges, legs, and everything inside its belly," said Corlis.

At one point, it appeared the little fella would escape the jaws of its nemesis; they both appeared to be weakening as the morning progressed. But when the massive snake began wrapping its mouth around its quarry, there was no question who the victor would be.

It was just unbelievable. We were sort of thinking that the snake had bitten off a little more than it could chew. But it did. It actually ate the crocodile," said Corlis.

Although news of a snake eating a croc sounds shocking; wildlife experts say that it is quite common that larger species of snakes prey on juvenile crocodiles in the wild. However, an adult would have likely made quick work of the anaconda's cousin.
