For most kids, the move to middle or high school brings both excitement and fear. Now is the time to help your child begin thinking about a move to a different school.
Check to see if your school or district is planning an event. In Wake County (NC), "Helping Your Child Transition" Family Day will be held on May 1. This event includes the following workshops:
- Middle School: Throughout the past 20 years Joe Bruzzese has successfully guided children, parents and educators through the challenges of the childhood years. As a nationally recognized author and speaker, Joe will bring innovation, energy, recognition and high standards to his keynote and presentation on "Thriving during the Middle School Years". Joe brings years of educational theory and practical experience to his work with families. For more from Joe, watch the video at the end of this article.
- High School: Come join the Wake County Counseling Services as they walk High School parents through the High School Graduation requirements. Transitioning to High School can be an exciting time for families but it doesn't come without some major changes in academic and social expectations. This session will offer parents information to make sure they understand exactly what is required during the high school years while ensuring their children make memories filled with an abundance of learning, life-long friendships, personal growth, career knowledge, and goal setting.
If you can't find a transition workshop in your area, look for events on the new school campus you can attend with your tween. Most middle and high school drama departments are having their spring productions, making this an easy way to get on campus and have a fun family night out. You can also check for PTA programs. With officer elections, most PTA organization's plan programs on a variety of events that are open to the public. These free events are a great way to find a way for you and your child to become involved in a new school. Spring sporting events are a bargain compared to attending professional events. Baseball, track, and soccer are the most popular, with many events held after school.
You can also find resources online. Joe Bruzzese has a page of free resources for parents including a copy of Saying Goodbye to Sundaes, a book on Thriving in middle school comes down to focusing on three main areas: Confidence, Connection and Challenge.
