Bald-headed and with a beautiful smile, Calvin Richardson captivates the audience with his personality and sensuous singing voice.
Richardson, along with R&B singers Angie Fisher and Tank, performed this past Thursday at Rain Nightclub in Studio City, California.
Dressed in a grey custom William Wilson suit, Calvin Richardson spared a few minutes before the show opened to speak about his latest single, upcoming album, and future projects with Eric Benet:
Cymone: You just released a new single, “We Gon' Love Tonight.” What was your inspiration behind this song?
Calvin: Well, "Love Tonight" is basically about those times when we get an opportunity to just spend intimate soul-feeling, quiet time with a person we really want to be with.
Cymone: Your last album came out in 2010, are there any projects coming up?
Calvin: Yeah, I have a new album coming out in September. The single "We Gon' Love Tonight” is off that project and it’ll be out September 16th.
Cymone: And who produced the album?
Calvin: Well, Eric Benet produced the album. It’s been 4 years since I put an album out and this will be my sixth album. Eric let me do my thing and we wrote everything together.
Cymone: So, how is it working with Eric Benet?
Calvin: Eric Benet is very, very talented. He is a down to earth guy. His voice is just crazy and to have the opportunity to work with him on the album, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Cymone: Can you tell me more about Jordan House Records and your role?
Calvin: With Jordan House, I’m the flagship artist, the first artist coming out of Eric’s label. He signed artists that he was a fan of. I happened to be blessed to be one of those guys.
Cymone: Did you guys collaborate on anything before he signed you?
Calvin: We never met before then. I got a phone call last year around September and it was Eric. It was just a natural thing. We had good flow, good chemistry, and good conversation. It didn't take long before the deal went through.
Cymone: Were you surprised he called you?
Calvin: Oh yeah, I was shocked and surprised. I wasn't expecting that. I’m a fan of Eric Benet as well. I get a call and he wants to sign me to a record deal.
Calvin Richardson also has multiple collaborations with R&B soul artists K-Ci & JoJo, Raphael Saadiq, Angie Stone and Charlie Wilson, to name a few. Be sure to stay tuned for his next album which drops September 16th.
