Smoking could cost you a job as some employers are cutting back on hiring smokers to keep down health-care costs. Dr. Oz wants to know if you think this is fair.
According to the Action on Smoking and Health, the average smoker costs companies more than $12,000 a year in health and disability related costs and takes four 15-minute breaks a day.
Researchers have concluded that second hand smoke is deadly. That is why 19 states have banned or restricted smoking in restaurants, bars and even beaches.
Ever since the restrictions, there has been a reduction in smokers; they are cutting down or quitting. San Francisco studies concluded that there has been a 6% drop in lung cancer since the restrictions on smoking.
Smokers wonder what comes next…A ban on hiring the obese, or those who drink. They think this is discrimination or an invasion of privacy.
Many business owners worried of a decline in customers, but studies in 5 states showed no significant change in restaurant and bar revenues.
So, in the near future you may not be able to get a job if you are a smoker. They will test you for tobacco use if you say you do not smoke. Employers are also offering cessation programs to help kick this deadly habit.
What are your thoughts on the smoking ban?
