Taproot Theatre has quietly been gaining ground as a theatre who presents stories with strong morals and excellent characters. They manage to not disappoint once again, with their latest musical “Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming”.
As you enter the theater you will hear the chirping or perhaps a more common phrase these days would be, tweeting of birdies in the background, and the stage has been set to transport you in time to an era where southern gospel and bluegrass were at their height. One by one endearing characters are welcomed onto the stage from the preacher with a constantly quirky smile smeared across his face, to the preachers’ wife who doesn’t sing rather she signs.
The talented cast does not disappoint, they bring their energy to a story that at times seems to fall flat. There are a few great one liners sprinkled through out the play:
