Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming at Taproot Theatre

by: Erik Stuhaug

Taproot Theatre has quietly been gaining ground as a theatre who presents stories with strong morals and excellent characters. They manage to not disappoint once again, with their latest musical “Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming”.

As you enter the theater you will hear the chirping or perhaps a more common phrase these days would be, tweeting of birdies in the background, and the stage has been set to transport you in time to an era where southern gospel and bluegrass were at their height. One by one endearing characters are welcomed onto the stage from the preacher with a constantly quirky smile smeared across his face, to the preachers’ wife who doesn’t sing rather she signs.

The talented cast does not disappoint, they bring their energy to a story that at times seems to fall flat.  There are a few great one liners sprinkled through out the play:

“I’m gonna lasso me some sinners.”
“10 Commandments cake, with 10 candles on it, that’s one for each thou shalt not”
“Spam- when the good Lord inspired Hormel to mash whatever that all is in there”
“I had weighed the nots and oughts, and I had thought I better not”
“God dreams much bigger dreams for us, then we ever imagine for ourselves”
When looking around the crowd I noticed that those 25 and under were few and far between. Perhaps this musical is more for an audience who will remember growing up listening to good ‘ol southern gospel.  The rousing end of the musical, captivated the audience, as they were all singing and clapping along. Each person was sent out the door with memories of a time past, yet of truths which still apply to the present.
