The Smithsonian's Freer and Sackler Museums of Asian Art celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year with a free noodle reception and screening of Taiwan-born, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman" on February 15.
So who says there's no such thing as a free... well, noodle reception and screening.
One of Taiwan's top chefs, Hou Chun-shen -- winner of the 2011 Taipei Beef Noodle Soup Competition -- will serve his award-winnning stew-style beef noodles during a 6 PM reception at the Freer's south corridor.
Considered a national dish of Taiwan, the noodles'll whet your appetite for the 7 PM screening of Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman", about an elderly chef who lives with his three daughters in modern Taiwan.
Lee, who co-wrote the comedy, won an Academy Award for "Brokeback Mountain", and also directed the Oscar-winning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Lee was born in Pingtung, Taiwan, and earned advanced degrees in theater at the University of Illinois, and in film at New York University.
The Smithsonian event is free, and no tickets are required. Seating at the Freer and Sackler's Meyer Auditorium is on a first-come, first-served basis.
So Happy Year of the Dragon, from the Smithsonian and the Taiwan Embassy's Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office.
