As of midnight, Tuesday, October 1, the federal government for the first time in 17 years. Congress failed to reach agreement to fund federal agencies after Congress remained divided over President Obama’s signature health-care initiative. As a result, there are some Smithsonian closings. The Smithsonian Art Museum today announced the status of its facilities.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery are closed. All daytime and evening events at the museums are canceled until the government has re-opened. Please check our website and online calendar for updated information before publishing an event. The online calendar will be updated with the status of tours and programs each day by 10 a.m.
If the government is still shut down by the end of the week, the major international symposium American Art in Dialogue with Africa and its Diaspora (registration full), scheduled for Oct. 4-5, will be moved offsite to the auditorium at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, located four blocks from the museum at 1250 New York Avenue N.W. Seating will be limited at this alternate location; details for registered participants will be online. I
If the federal government shutdown ends by noon on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Smithsonian museums are reopened by Friday, Oct. 4, the event will take place at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and proceed as originally planned.
