Smithfield recalls 38,000 pounds of sausage following reports of plastic pieces

According to reports by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recalled Sausage is in containers marked as Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll and was produced on January 11, 2013. A picture of the product is included with this article.

The recall information indicates the recalled sausage was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and the District of Columbia.

The company learned of the problem through consumer complaints. To date there have been no injuries reported due to the Smithfield Packing Co., Inc. product.

The plastic found in some of the sausage products may be from gloves. Consumers are advised not to use this or any recalled product.

The following products are subject to recall:

  • 1-lb. chubs of "Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll" with a use-by date of Mar. 12, 2013
  • Cases containing chubs of "Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll" with a case code of 78533109741

This is considered a Class II recall, which FSIS defines as follows:

This is a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.
