Margie Sue Smith and Roberta Robeck topped a 63-team field to claim the $200 first-place prize in the latest in a series of Bobby Combs Century Doubles tournaments at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes on Sunday (May 17).
Smith posted a three-game handicap pinfall of 656, while Robeck added 726 for the winning score of 1,382, while Bob and Diane Piper finished in the runner-up position with 1,309.
Donald Humphreys and Donald Mack captured the No. 3 position, while rounding out the top five were Tina Kintz and Richard Wight (1,298) and Frank and Barbara Mang (1,295).
Other cashing teams included: Ruth Lugert and Mary Kyle (1,293); Ed Yager and Lisa Hargis (1,287); Steve Polanski and Phillip Williams (1,282); Dickson Kincaid and Don Martel (1,280); Joe Amory and Eric Thomas (1,278); and Marsha Fritz and Carlos Losada (1,271).
Allen and Piper victorious in Alibi Doubles
Ed Allen and Bob Piper won the $100 top prize in the optional Alibi Doubles competition, in which participating bowlers can pair up with any other bowler(s) in the tournament.
Allen's handicap score of 641 and Piper's total of 712 provided the winning 1,353 pinfall, which was four better than the 1,349 posted by Jen Antonsen and Harvey Garelick.
Chris Christmas and Steve Polanski were third on the Alibi listing with 1,305, while Fred Shafer and Bruce Combs were fourth at 1,304, and Jen Antonsen and George Fuller were fifth at 1,299.
Completing the list of cashing Alibi teams were: Cindy and Richard Wight (1,296); Sandy and Bruce Combs (1,288); Jen Antonsen and Bill Magruder (1,285); Sandy Combs and Fred Shaffer (1,284); Bob Foutz and Fred Shafer (1,279); Shirley Heilmann and Dickson Kincaid (1,278); Cee Butler and Bruce Combs (1,276); and Jeff Pennell and Don Mack (1,273).
The next in the series of popular Bobby Combs Century Doubles events will be held on Sunday, May 5, at Treasure Lanes in Port Charlotte.
Sarasota-Manatee association conducts women's tourney this weekend
The Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association will conduct its annual women's championship tournament at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes next weekend (March 23-24).
With the final entry deadline set for midnight Friday (March 22), the one-weekend event carries an entry fee of $20 per woman per event -- in singles, doubles and five-player team competition -- plus optional $5 all-events fees, both scratch and handicap (90 percent of 220).
There will be two Saturday squads, at noon and 4 p.m., while there will be only one squad on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.
