Smid selected to Team Czech Republic for Olympic Winter Games

According to the Canadian Press on Monday, Calgary Flames defenseman Ladislav Smid will represent the Czech Republic at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

So far this season, Smid has one goal and two assists for three points while splitting his time with the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. The native of Frydlant, Czechoslovakia was traded from Edmonton to Calgary with Olivier Roy for Roman Horak and Laurent Brossoit on November 8.

Smid is joined on the Czech defense by Radko Gudas of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Zbynek Michalek of the Phoenix Coyotes, Michal Rozsival of the Chicago Blackhawks and Marek Zidlicky of the New Jersey Devils.

The Czech captain will be Tomas Plekanec of the Montreal Canadiens. Other notables include future Hockey Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr of the New Jersey Devils, who will be representing the Czech Republic in his sixth Olympic Winter Games, Jagr's teammate Patrik Elias, Ales Hemsky of the Edmonton Oilers and David Krejci of the Boston Bruins.

The Czech Republic will play Sweden in their first game of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games on February 12.
