According to Scott Oake of CBC Sports in a report on Saturday, Calgary Flames defenseman will be following in his father's footsteps at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

That is because Ladislav Smid Jr.'s father Ladislav Smid Sr. represented the Czech Republic at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck and won a bronze medal. According to www.sports-reference.com, Smid scored one goal in six games for the Czech Republic, who finished behind the Soviet Union and Sweden. Smid Sr.'s goal came in a 5-1 win over Switzerland on February 4, 1964.

Ladislav Smid Sr. also won a silver medal while playing for Czechoslovakia at the 1966 World Hockey Championships in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia.

Czechoslovakia previously won a bronze medal in men's ice hockey at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp and a silver medal at the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz. Their only gold medal in hockey history came as the Czech Republic at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, thanks to flawless goaltending from Dominik Hasek.
