Smash hit 'Evita' to wrap up Miami's Broadway show season

The national touring company of the Broadway smash hit "Evita" is coming to Miami for a limited engagement May 27-June 1 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

This iconic Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber show swept the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards when it opened on Broadway more than three decades ago, with its memorable music that includes "Don't Cry for Me Argentina." Since then, there have also been many national tours and revivals, and it formed the basis of the movie starring Madonna. But this is the first opportunity that Miami audiences will have to see the story on stage.

The show tells the story of Eva Perón, the First Lady of Argentina. Born poor and illegitimate in 1919, she used her beauty and charisma to become an actress, and it was then that she caught the eye of rising political star Juan Perón. After Perón won the presidency, she became very popular with the people of the country, becoming the "power duo" of the day. She fell ill with cancer and withered before the populace's eyes, dying at only the age of 33. But she remains a figure of fascination today, fueled no doubt by the Broadway show and movie's mix of fact and fiction.

Tickets start at $26 and may be ordered online or by calling the Arsht Center Box Office at 305-949-6722.
