The Smash Burger media event that took place yesterday could be considered a "Smashing" Success! From the warm greeting and politeness of the manager and warm greeting from the PR &Marketing manager Christine Ferris, to a staff who focus is the customer when they hit the door, this location in Tulsa at 91st and S.Yale is firing on all pistons.
When you walk in the establishment, you notice how stream lined the interior is. It is complimented further by the choice of the colors chosen of red, black, and butcher top style top, which makes for an eye catching pop.
Upon arrival attendees were told to take a seat, get a drink, and then were greeted by wait staff with the first sampling of the event which was the smash fries, and veggie frites. The smash fries are freshly thin cut fries tossed with rosemary, olive oil, and garlic with a dipping sauce. The veggie frites had a nice aromatic seasoning, and were flash fried to perfection and served with a tongue pleasing sauce.
The event started once everyone was seated and had their sides. As the tasting began, we started with the classic smash burger, which included American Cheese, smash sauce, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and sliced onion on an egg bun.Once the attendees were done with the first sample they had the chance to try the BBQ,Bacon,&Cheddar Burger sample. This sample had great flavor with the haystack onions, applewood smoked bacon, accented with cheddar cheese on an egg bun. The only thing that could compliment this burger better would be a bit of honey bbq sauce.(When you get it home, if you happen to have some, put it on there and chow down.) The next sample the attendees to the media day had the chance to enjoy was the Truffle Mushroom Swiss Burger which included, truffle mayo, a saute of baby portabella mushrooms, and aged swiss on an egg bun. Though some were not a fan of the mushrooms, they picked them off, and enjoyed the burger. The next sample to be explored was the regional burger, the Oklahoma Burger, which included fried pickles, pepper jack cheese, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato, and buttermilk ranch dressing on an egg bun.As the tasting menu made it's way towards the end, the next sampling was for the veggie lovers, the Spicy Veggie Black Bean which included, fresh jalapenos with the veins and seeds in tact, fresh guacamole, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion slices, and chipotle mayo on a spicy chipotle bun. The mayo had an aromatic scent that caught your attention, and the bun was visually appealing drawing your to wonder about the taste further. After the veggie offering, the tasting moved to the first chicken offering, which was the Classic Chicken, which included lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, mayo on a multi-grain bun. To round out the sandwich portion of the tasting the attendees were treated to the sample of the Avocado Club Chicken, which included fresh sliced avocado, applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing, mayo on a multi-grain bun.
From the burger and sandwich portion of the tasting the attendees got the chance to sample a couple of the handspun shakes that Smashburger provides on their menu. The samples of the shakes included the oreo shake, and the nutter butter shake. The oreo was sort of like a cookies and cream shake, with a bit of whip cream, the nutter butter shake had chunks of nutter butter cookies in it, and was just heavenly.(But what made with haagen dazs wouldn't be. Guaranteed these will be the most addictive menu item.)
Once the sampling concluded, the attendees had the chance to see behind the scenes to see how the smash is applied to the burger and how it is seasoned to maximize flavor. Some of the attendees of the media day had the chance to try their hand at smashing a patty of beef.A few attendees aproned up, gloved up and tried their hand at the smashing. The smashing actually takes quite a bit of arm power, which really was amazing.(The time it takes to smash the burger patty, doing that multiple times a day, will give you a workout, and great looking arms.)One of the things that makes smash burger unique is the fact they take such great care of the spatulas by sharpening the edges to make patty removal from the grill easier.
When the day concluded, the attendees had the chance to ask questions and get answered more fully, than during the presentation.
If there are any menu recommendations that this examiner would make they would be to try the following:
Veggie Frites with dip
Smash Fries with dip
The Handspun shakes that are addicting
For a regional speciality the Oklahoma Burger
